World Mental Health Day on 10th October reminded us of the importance of addressing mental health openly . Public awareness has grown over the past decade , but so has the need for support . On p19 , Aviva reports that mental health was behind 23.9 % of income protection claims in 2023 , illustrating the connection between life ’ s challenges and mental health . Emma Vaughan , our Head of Protection and Health Solutions ( p6 ) explores how the pressures of homeownership affect young people ’ s mental well-being , emphasising the critical role advisers play in supporting and protecting clients .

Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any time . Macmillan ’ s support line has seen an increase in people with cancer facing both financial and mental health struggles . Advisers must approach mental health conversations with care and empathy , mindful that a client ’ s past may include painful memories . Scottish Widows ’ article on p20 discusses the RECES model , which helps advisers navigate these sensitive discussions and reduce stigma .

Finally , World Mental Health Day ’ s theme of workplace well-being reminds us to care for each other . Many advisers work alone , so it ’ s important to check in on yourself and colleagues . If you notice signs of distress , extend the same empathy you offer clients — ask , “ Are you okay ?”
